A Beginner's Guide to Exercising

Want to get your fitness up but feeling overwhelmed at the  thought of where to start ? With summer around the corner and a new wardrobe coming in, you’ll definitely be wanting to look and feel your best - and there’s no better way to do that than exercising. Keep reading for some tips on how to get started on your fitness journey! 

Make fitness goals 

It doesn’t have to be huge goals like running a marathon or climbing Mount Everest - but giving yourself attainable milestones to reach will motivate you and give you a reason to keep going and challenging yourself when you reach them. Maybe you want to be able to run a mile without taking a break or go to the gym five days a week - set yourself realistic goals to meet and keep challenging yourself. 

Mix things up

Doing the same exercises everyday will get boring and eventually your muscles will get used to it so that you burn fewer calories and build less muscle, Avoid this through interval training (increase your intensity for one minute then slow down and repeat) as well as strength training and cardio such as swimming, cycling, weight training and kickboxing. 

Fuel yourself

Because you will be burning calories, you need to make sure you're replenishing your body with nutritious and healthy foods. Make sure you're eating three meals a day plus healthy snacks. Before a workout it’s good to eat healthy carbs such as fruit and whole grains while after you should fill up on proteins and carbs - so think of a peanut butter sandwich, nuts, or egg on whole grain toast!  

Drink water 

Make sure you keep yourself hydrated - especially if you are exercising in the sun. If you’re dehydrated you run the risk of muscle cramps, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke. Make sure you drink 2-3 cups of water before your workout and continue throughout and after.  

Start small 

You may be excited and have big goals you want to reach one day, but make sure you are listening to your body and not pushing yourself over the limit. Remember if you do too much too quickly you run the risk of burning out.

It’s about consistency, and showing up everyday even if it’s just a brisk walk or taking the stairs instead of the escalator. It’s a lifestyle!
