Finding Your Happiness

Finding your happiness

finding your happiness

With the days getting longer and the sun beginning to peak out of those dreary winter clouds comes the desire to feel and live our best life. Though we can’t always control external factors that may hinder our happiness, we are fully in control of how we discover happiness from within. Keep reading for our top ten ways to find it.

1. Surround yourself with uplifting people.

Humans are social creatures - we are meant to be together, sharing meals, memories, and moments. In a world where connections are becoming digitised more and more, it’s so important to take the time and effort to connect with people in real life. From grabbing a coffee with a friend to hosting a dinner party, there are so many options to keep yourself engaged in the real world - and remember, surrounding yourself with positive people is key. We have no time for negativity.

2. Be Present.

Our minds have a tendency to get stuck in ruminating on the past or worrying about planning the future, leaving us susceptible to letting life pass us by without actually living in and enjoying the present. Let go of those consuming thoughts and value the moment you are in because you really do only live once.

3. Feel your negative feelings.

It’s implausible to expect to be happy and positive all the time. Experiencing a range of emotions - even the negative ones - is healthy. Life is hard and things don’t always go the way we want them to. So let the tears flow, have a rant, get lost in your emotions for a moment - but pick yourself back up afterwards, feeling refreshed and ready to move on. Because the truth is we wouldn't appreciate good times without the bad.

4. Spend time in nature.

It’s so easy to get drawn into the daily stresses of life while also forgetting that there’s much more beyond our little bubbles. Taking time in nature can remind us of the beauty that surrounds us. There are studies that show the grounding effect of nature can improve mental health and reduce tension. Feel the grass between your fingers and the warmth of the sun on your face, get caught in the rain, breathe in the fresh air, and savour the moment.

5. Don’t compare yourself to others.

Different things are important to different people. It doesn’t make sense to compare yourself to others because your wants and needs are individual to you. Use your vision of you in five years as a basis to grow and become who you want to be.

6. Appreciate your accomplishments.

As a society, we are so focused on what’s next that we sometimes forget to take a minute to celebrate all we’ve achieved so far. Take a step back and look at how far you’ve come. Think of all the things you’ve achieved in life, give yourself a pat on the back, and treat yourself - because you deserve it!

7. Share your happiness.

What goes around comes around, and contributing to society can also help us feel a sense of belonging. It can be as small as a smile to a stranger or as big as volunteering for a cause you care about, spreading positivity will promote happiness in your own life.

8. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

We tend to be our own harshest critics. So when you are being particularly unkind to yourself, think about whether you would tell your friend the same things. Learn to understand, love and grow from your flaws.

9. Set goals.

Having a purpose is a central need for us all. It can feel overwhelming to try and find a singular purpose, so instead think of setting small goals to work towards. Whether these aspirations are personal, career oriented, or learning a new skill, cultivating your ambition and drive will give you that sense of purpose and contentment.

10. Treasure what you have.

It’s easy to focus on what we don’t have, but appreciating the little things in your life that make you happy is key. A beautiful spring sunset, belly laughing with your best friend, a spontaneous visit to someone you love, or a scrumptious meal are all things to relish. What little things make you happy? Write them down and make a list; you may be surprised at the abundance of things in your life that create happiness for you.
